News Issue No.2

New radiographers happy with career choice

Despite the talk of credit crunches and rising inflation, there is at least some good news from those who have chosen a career in radiography.

According to the preliminary findings from the Society’s graduate surveys, nine out of 10 2007 graduates started their first job within three months of qualifying, and 82 per cent of 2008 graduates had a job arranged for after graduation.

While job searching hasn’t been plain sailing for all, those who have started work said they are pleased with their chosen profession. Over 80 per cent of 2007 graduates either agreed or strongly agreed that radiography as a career is so far consistent with their expectations.

On the whole, newly qualified radiographers are relishing the challenges.

One respondent said: “After qualification I thought I had been taught all I needed to know about radiography. I was wrong. Every day I am learning new skills in a variety of situations. The learning just doesn’t stop!”

Another commented: “Although the transition from student to qualified radiographer was very challenging, I feel confident in my work and enjoy it very much.”

One delighted radiographer revealed: “It was scary (and still can be!) but it was the best thing I ever did with my life.”

However, a small proportion of respondents said that as yet their expectations hadn’t been met, citing issues around lack of development and career progression. One wrote: “It is clear that there are not many Band 6 jobs coming up which is making it very difficult for Band 5 radiographers to progress.

“There is also little opportunity and funding to undertake further training and post grad courses.”
